Understanding the Xbox 360 E74 error

Please just popped in Halo 3 you log on Xbox live any join a game with your friends. Everything is going fine and your leading in kills all the sudden the game freezes. You think it’s just a minor glitch but when you power your system on again you get red lights and the screen boots to a black E74 error screen. What just happened?

The short answer, is that the GPU (graphics processing unit)has come loose off the motherboard. This is out of your control and is not your fault. When the GPU comes loose you get the E74 error screen.

The long answer is that Microsoft was in such a race to be the next-generation console on the market that they rushed through production and made some serious errors. During the design stage is Microsoft ran into a problem; the DVD drive would not fit into the Xbox 360. There was just too much stuff on the motherboard.

So to make room Microsoft decided to shrink the heat sinks. Heat sinks are what lie on top of the CPU and GPU and keep them cool. Sinking the heat sink meant that the GPU and CPU would not be kept as cool as they should have been.

R&D was not done thoroughly and the small heat sinks were not considered a problem until about a year later when millions of Xbox 360s started overheating and failing.

How to fix the Xbox 360 E74 error

So the problem is heat. Since the heat sinks were made smaller than they should’ve been the motherboard heats up more than it should. As the motherboard heats up it begins to flex. In addition to flexing the solder points on the CPU and GPU have become weak because of the heat. So as the motherboard flexes the chips become loose.

To fix the problem you need to take your Xbox 360 apart and adjust how the heat sinks sits on the chips. By adjusting how the heat sinks keep the motherboard cool you can avoid the chips becoming loose as the motherboard heats up.

The good news is fixing this problem is simple and you can use household tools to take apart and apply the repair. Don’t let the E74 error stop your Xbox 360 from working fix it today.

PS3 downloads are now a reality for just about every PS3 owner in the world, the only exceptions being those that have no internet access. If you own a PS3 and don’t have internet, it’s probably about time you made the step up, as you don’t know what you are missing – PS3 downloads can seriously lengthen your enjoyment of your console.

The PS3 has a few tricks up its sleeve that can really make you understand why the console itself is so expensive, namely the HDMI 1080p output and also the inbuilt BluRay player, and now when you add to that the ability to buy PS3 downloads directly from Sony’s own site, and you can really start to understand what an entertainment powerhouse this machine is going to be over the next few years.

It doesn’t take too long however before most PS3 owners start asking how or where can they get some free PS3 downloads, or namely free PS3 game downloads. The answers to this question are many, and actually it’s a complicated situation.

The easiest route is the downloads directly from Sony – they aren’t quite free, but you can get the latest games on the day of release and usually save yourself some money on the price in stores. Pretty cool but not exactly free.

The bottom line though, is that you CAN download free PS3 games, if you are willing to go to the various P2P and torrent sites. If you check it out you’ll see what I mean, just about every game you’ve heard of is basically there waiting to be downloaded. But, (and it’s a big but) chances are you won’t be able to use these games at all. The PS3, with it’s complex internal architecture and impregnable firmware has as yet proved to be uncrackable to the hackers of the world, which means you literally can’t use the games you download. Why anyone has copied the contents of the discs to their PC and uploaded them to the torrent sites is anyone’s guess, but for the vast majority of us, playing these free PS3 downloads like this remains somewhere in the future.

There is talk of people being able to remove the PS3s hard drive and attach the hard drive to their computer, and transfer the games across this way, which would apparently allow a smart hacker to bypass the hyper-secure firmware. In theory this would then give any PS3 owner the ability to enjoy all the free PS3 downloads they could want, but as yet successful results from this are hard to find, if any exist at all.

As you’ve seen, obtaining free PS3 downloads is a bit of a gray area at the moment, with some people claiming it’s possible and others claiming not, with no real proof either way. Your best bet until something new develops is to enjoy the Sony downloads, and check out the links below.

Just last week, Sony unveiled it Playstation 3 Slim version. The gaming console, is a slimmer and lighter version of older PS3 consoles. It carries a 120GB hard drive, which is an upgrade from the 80GB of storage offered in the earlier PS3. The console will sell for US$299 and become available on September 1.

Sony has made some enhancements under the hood to boost its processing speed and power efficiency. The PS3 Slim will carry an upgraded version of the Cell microprocessor, which is being jointly developed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba.

Many gaming fans are rushing to pre-order this unit to make sure they recieve it by its release date. The PS3 slim looks, as you’d expect, kind of like a diet-PS3, except for the part where it’s still full-featured only priced $100 less. Make that 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, roughly as tall, but thinner, with a matte finish all around.

Cheaper and smaller? Yes, and everyone from the home gamer to the custom automotive sector will appreciate this. It’s 33 percent smaller and it uses 34 percent less power to operate. A smaller processor means cheaper manufacturing costs for Sony which is reflected in the price.

The battle between the PS3 Slim and the Xbox 360 will surely be won by Sony this Christmas unless Microsoft can step up its game. A Slim Xbox 360? Not anytime soon from what I hear but that would level the playing field for me. Hopefully that will happen soon.
